White House concerned over Syrian regime violation to cessation of hostilities agreement

WASHINGTON, March 2 (KUNA) — US officials are concerned about reports that the Syrian regime has engaged in tank and artillery attacks against civilians near places such as Latakia, Homs and Hama and around Damascus, and those attacks, if confirmed, would be a flagrant violation of the cessation of hostilities, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.
“We are going to monitor these reports of violations,” Earnest said. “We take them quite seriously. And we are going to continue to strongly urge all parties to exercise restraint and abide by the commitments that were included in the cessation of hostilities.” In recent days, there has been an overall reduction in airstrikes against Syrian opposition and civilians compared to the number conducted prior to implementation of the cessation of hostilities, he said. “That obviously is an encouraging sign,” he added.
“We are also encouraging all of our partners in the ISSG (International Syria Support Group) to use their influence with parties on the ground to not engage in actions that put the cessation of hostility at risk,” Earnest said. (end) ak.hb
