UAE a role model for other nations, UAE Paper

WAM ABU DHABI, 10th October, 2013 (WAM) — The UAE is one of the premier nations in the world when it comes to stepping up and being counted in the sphere of humanitarian services, commented a UAE daily.

“Time and again it has laid down its credentials as a responsible global citizen, motivated and committed to the cause of helping lesser privileged nations across multiple platforms financial, or otherwise”, said ‘Gulf News’ in an editorial today.

On Tuesday, the government’s statement of intent was highlighted in the UAE Foreign Aid Report 2012, when a staggering commitment of billions of dirhams was reported to have been channelled towards development projects in 150 countries, with special emphasis on Asia. More than one government-affiliated entity in the country had pledged to help the needy and underprivileged. This is a philosophy that most countries will find hard to rival. It is also a signal that the assistance is neither interest motivated, nor conditional. Rather, it is dedicated towards the overall prosperity of the human race, regardless of their race or religion and therein lies the dignity of the action.

Leading the way in this noble cause are the nation’s benevolent champions, President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Actions speak louder than words and the UAE was graded as the 16th largest foreign aid donor last year, advancing from 20th place in 2011, which also saw an improvement from 26th place in 2010, with Dh5.83 billion being disbursed to 137 countries and regions.

A further commitment of Dh5.59 billion was also made towards future development projects in 13 countries. Richer and more prosperous countries will be hard pressed to emulate this and they must reflect on their global responsibilities and question their contribution towards the advancement of society.

“The UAE’s foreign policy is a mature one. Its focus on humanitarian diplomacy enables it to touch the lives of millions through diverse causes. It seeks to set an example by actions outlined by none other than the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. A young nation can also be a great role model”, concluded GN.
