Qatar Succeeds in Issuance of UN Resolution on Human Rights Centre

United Nations, November 28 (QNA) – United Nations Third Committee has adopted during the current 67th session of the General Assembly by an overwhelming majority a draft resolution submitted by the State of Qatar on the financing of the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for south-west Asia and the Arab region from the United Nations regular budget starting the next fiscal year.
HE Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim Al Thani, Director of the Office of Human Rights at the Foreign Ministry has introduced the draft resolution for unanimous adoption.
HE the Director of the Office of Human Rights underlined that the reputation and status which Qatar enjoys regionally and internationally contributed to overcoming challenges and difficulties which encountered the unanimous adoption of the draft resolution, especially in the shadow of the global financial crisis and the policy of the UN Secretary-General to cut expenses.
The United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for south-west Asia and the Arab region was established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/153, which was adopted unanimously in December 2005. The Centre was  opened in May 2005.
Financing the center from  the regular budget of the United Nations allows it get financial and human resources from the general budget of the United Nations, and that will contribute effectively to  the centre’s implementation of its mandate relating to training and documentation in the field of human rights, especially in the shadow of developments in the region.
The remaining procedural steps for the adoption of the resolution by the General Assembly enables the presentation of the issue to the Advisory Committee for Administrative and Financial Affairs in June 2013 which  shall submit its recommendations to the Fifth Committee of the United Nations, that will adopt the resolution during  the United Nations General Assembly’s 68th session in November and December 2013.(QNA)
