Qatar’s Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC) along with the Korean Trade Investment Agency (KOTRA) collaborated to host the ITS Forum at the Hilton Hotel in Doha on June 19th 2019. The Forum offered the opportunity for as many as 13 South Korean companies specializing in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to showcase their technologies and expertise with their Qatari Counterparts and discuss opportunities for partnerships and collaborations during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and beyond.

The Forum agenda included a G2G meeting between Her Excellency Reem Al Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary of Digital Society Development, MOTC; His Excellency Chang-mo Kim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the State of Qatar; and senior leadership from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (MOLIT), ITS Korea, and Korea Expressway Corporation. The parties discussed potential collaboration and partnerships with TASMU, MOTC’s Smart Qatar program, related specifically to the transport and logistics sector during FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and beyond as the parties drew parallels between the World Cup and South Korea’s experience during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018.

During the meetings, South Korean parties were also briefed on TASMU’s projects and the different ways TASMU is driving the intersection of innovation and advanced technology to transform Qatar into a smart country that serves the state’s citizens and economy. The South Korean delegation was offered the opportunity to participate in TASMU’s Digital Cluster, the program responsible for collaboration with technology partners, and share their experiences and recommendations with local Qatari companies.

Her Excellency Al Mansoori commented: We are honored to host the ITS delegation here in Qatar. The engaging presentations and series of B2B and G2G meetings brought to light many aspects of our shared vision for innovation and technological advancement.

Particularly as we look ahead to World Cup 2022, there is abundant potential and opportunity for collaboration between TASMU and our South Korean counterparts to deliver best practices and smart-solutions that facilitate convenience and seamlessness for Qatar’s citizens, residents, and visitors, she added.

His Excellency Chang-mo Kim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the State of Qatar, stated: The ITS Forum is meaningful as it is in line with the previous discussions and agreements at the highest level. I believe our two countries can share policies and experiences in the area of intellectual transportation systems, and that companies of both countries could have more business opportunities in the area.

Mr. Sung Seup Kang, Director of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, stated: Here in Doha, Qatar, efforts are being made to establish various transport systems and related infrastructure for the successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. The ITS Roadshow is a venue to share visions, plans and experiences of both governments and introduce technologies and experiences of businesses of both countries to discuss cooperation.

The ITS Forum comprised of a series of presentations by TASMU; Ashghal; South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (MOLIT); Hyundai Motors; ITS Korea; and Korea Telecom among others.
