BERLIN, June 24 (KUNA) — Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her “great regret” over the UK’s decision to leave the EU on Friday, hoping the EU will remain united.
“We have to remain calm and composed. We need to make composed analysis and decisions,” in the light of the historic Brexit results, said Merkel in a press conference held in Berlin.
Merkel added that she will meet with the European Council President Donald Tusk, French President Francois Hollande and Italyآ’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi next Monday to discuss the exit’s impact on Europe.
In the same context, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on the ministry’s Twitter account, said the result was “truly sobering, it looks like a sad day for Europe and the United Kingdom.”(end)
