Jordanian King Abdullah, Mogherini discuss regional situation

BRUSSELS, March 16 (KUNA) — EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met in Brussels Wednesday with the King of Jordan Abdullah II to reaffirm the EU engagement with Jordan and to discuss the political and security situation in the region.
According to a statement released by Mogherini’s office tonight, the EU foreign policy chief highlighted the EU’s will to strengthen and broaden the longstanding EU-Jordan partnership in light of the challenging domestic and regional situation.
Mogherini and the Jordanian King discussed efforts taken forward since last month’s London pledging conference on Syria in order to build up the countries’ resilience and capacity to face the consequences of the crisis while developing its own economy.

On Syria, Mogherini stressed the need for a political solution and underlined Jordan’s key and constructive approach to the crisis and the common work in the International Syria Support Group process and to support the UN-sponsored Geneva talks.
As regards the Middle East Peace Process, she reaffirmed that a consolidated engagement by the international community remains crucial and that preventing escalation and violence on the ground remains a priority.
Wednesday’s meeting took place ahead of Mogherini’s visit to Jordan next week.
Later tonight, King Abdullah II met together over dinner with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament and Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment Bank. (end)
