Green Festival Enhances The Status Of U.A.E. In Achieving Sustainable Development

WAM Dubai, 17th Oct, 2013 (WAM) – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) ensured its support for the long-term national initiative launched in January of last year by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to build a green economy in the U.A.E. under the slogan (A Green Economy for Sustainable Development), and it is one of the major government agencies that takes it upon itself to share the responsibility for sustainable environment in Dubai in particular and the UAE in general.

Mr. Adai Al Deesi, Head of the Green Economic Committee and Director of Assets and Properties in the RTA s Corporate Technical Support Services Sector, said during the RTA’s participation in the press conference held by the organizing committee for the U.A.E. Green Festival in Masdar City in the capital Abu Dhabi in the presence of governmental, private and sponsors representatives: ”this festival which will be held from March 16 to April 16, 2014 for the first time in the region and sets off in most parts of the State, enhances the leadership of the U.A.E. as one of the Green destinations in the world, pointing out that the Authority positions sustainability within its strategic objectives due to its full awareness of its social responsibility towards the environment and the citizens of the State.

He added: ”The RTA and since its inception in 2005, began to insert green initiatives within many of the projects and services provided to the public, including, for example; the use of electricity to feed the Dubai Metro, and the provision of buses with high-tech diesel with low sulfur rates compatible with international standards, and the Authority currently monitors the performance of the green bus with biodiesel, as well as studies for the use of compressed gas as an alternative fuel for vehicles.” He stated that the Authority has recently begun to use hybrid vehicles in the (Dubai Taxi Corporation) fleet, and that there are currently 20 taxi vehicles partly operated by electricity and if its efficiency was proven more than 3,500 taxis in Dubai will convert to the hybrid system in the near future, which means making a significant reduction in the proportion of carbon emissions.

He said: The Authority and as part of its social responsibility, has launched the Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport, an award that includes all actors in the state, which have initiatives or practices concerned with sustainable transport, adding on the other hand that the Authority developed its strategic plan to include specific targets to support the green economy indicators including performance targets which are measured periodically to ensure the achievement of positive results in this field. He also underscored the ability of the Authority, through its membership in the official Committee of the UAE Green Festival, to respond to the environmental sustainability criteria in the region and serve future generations in this important context.
