WAM ABU DHBAI, 18th October, 2013 (WAM)–There have been famous coaches in UAE football, both at the club and country level, but there may not be quite another one like Bruno Metsu. The news of the Frenchman’s death earlier this week hence was like a love affair coming to an end for UAE football.

“It is not merely due to the fact that he guided the UAE to their first-ever Gulf Cup triumph in 2007 or that in 2003, he was instrumental in taking Al Ain to the top of Asian club football, ” said English language local daily, Gulf Times, in its editorial on Friday.

It added that there was something enigmatic about his personality which “had the players both in awe of and love for him, with many of them saying that not all coaches had his ability to guide them so well psychologically along with the technical know-how.” Metsu had converted to Islam after his marriage and adopted the name Abdul Karim and one of his former players find it almost symbolic that he was relieved of the pain of cancer on the first day of Eid Al Adha. The long haired, strapping figure of Metsu, pacing like a lion’ inside the coaches’ area will be sorely missed.
