UAE’s man-made and natural assets in harmony: UAE daily

WAM ABU DHABI, 5th October, 2013 (WAM)–In a country that is blessed with some of the most beautiful beach stretches in the world, it is a matter of heightened pride that many of them are also recipients of a prestigious eco-award the Blue Flag, an initiative of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a Denmark-based non-government, non-profit organisation that promotes sustainable development through environmental education.

Last week, 12 more beaches in the UAE were awarded the status, bringing the total tally to 24, marking a celebratory moment for the country.

The award, among other things, looks into the way a country manages its beaches and marinas vis-a-vis water quality, waste management, coastal planning and protection and environmental management and safety.

“The judging process is rigorous and unified, using an international set of criteria with provisions for regional factors and the fact that the UAE has garnered so many awards speaks volumes of its commitment to keep one of its most beautiful natural assets in a pristine and sustainable condition,” said UAE local English language daily, Gulf News, in its editorial on Saturday.

It added the task before any country that develops itself at a smart pace is “to maintain the balance between its natural and man-made assets as an investment for posterity. The UAE is proving that it has got this balance right.” WAM/MN
