Trump Plans to Establish Safe Zones Refugees in Syria

Washington, US President Donald Trump said today he “will absolutely do safe zones in Syria” for refugees fleeing violence in the war-torn country.

Syria’s six-year civil war has left 400,000 dead, according to the UN and Arab league envoy to Syria back in April 2016. “It’s a disaster, what’s happening there,” Trump said.

In an interview with the ABC Trump criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s immigration policies. Trump said Merkel made a “catastrophic mistake” by welcoming an influx of immigrants into her country but maintained that he has “great respect” for the German leader.

Trump stated during his presidential campaign a plan to start setting up “safe zones” for refugees in Syria, a step that Barack Obama long resisted, fearing the potential for being pulled deeper into the conflict and the threat of clashes between US and Russian warplanes over Syria.
