Qatar Leads Standings of GCC Swimming Championship after Day One

Doha, March 01 (QNA) – Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari inaugurated today the GCC Swimming Championship.

The four-day event is organized by the Qatar Swimming Association at Hamad Aquatic Center. Qatari swimmers who are 17 and over led the standings after day one with 11 medals. Five gold, three silver, and three bronze. The UAE came second with 10 medals. Two of which were gold, five silver, and three bronze. In the 10 years and over category, Qatar won four medals. Three of them were gold, the fourth was a bronze one.

Tomorrow Thursday will see competition of the 17 and over and 10 years category resume. The final two days of the competition, Friday and Saturday, will see three categories played out. They are the 11-12, 13-14, and 15-17 age groups.

Commenting on the results, President of Qatar Swimming Association Khaleel Al Jabir told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that he was happy with the performance of all GCC swimmers who played in today’s two categories. He added that the highly-polished performances reflected the commitment to promoting the sport across the region.

On the Qatari swimmers’ performance today in particular, Al Jabir said the association was pleased and expressed his hope that the strong performances continue. He added that it also shows the association is doing the right things to develop swimmers in Qatar who can compete. Al Jabir noted that the swimmers managed to break four new GCC records. The President of Qatar’s Swimming Association praised the performance of the UAE and Bahrain as well, then wished all participants a strong showing in the coming days. (QNA)
