Doha, – The State of joins the world countries in celebrating the World Glaucoma Week 12-18 March under the theme (Beat Invisible Glaucoma).

The Ministry of Public Health in collaboration of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), on this occasion, will organize a number of awareness activities at Rawdat Alkhail and Leabaib health centers.

The activities include eye check and measuring the eye pressure to the public in addition to distributing awareness brochures and booklets. Moreover educational e-mails will be sent to all the staff of the Ministry of Public Health, and PHCC.

The Ministry will also hold an awareness event for the staff of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), that includes fundus examination for who exceeded 40 years of age in addition to lectures on the prevention and early detection of the disease.

Manager of Health Promotion and Non-communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Public Health Sheikha Dr. Al-Anoud bint Mohamed Al-Thani said that the World Glaucoma Week is an international initiative launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) with the aim of raising community awareness of the disease.

Glaucoma is one of the blindness-causing eye diseases in Qatar, and the first among the causes of blindness for those over fifty-years of age.

The ration of blindness among Qatar’s population is around 13 cases per thousand people, said Sheikha Dr. Al-Anoud bint Mohamed Al-Thani adding that 39 percent of the cases of blindness were the result of Glaucoma. (QNA)
