Only one name left for prime ministry

Only one name left for prime ministryWith two weeks left before the congress of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), there is only one name left to be nominated as the prime minister and party leader: Foreign Minister Ahmet DavutoIlu. The principles set by President-elect Recep Tayyip ErdoIan for the future of the AKP that seem to have been adopted by the party point out that there is no option other than DavutoIlu.

The new prime minister is going to head the AKP and the government until the June 2015 parliamentary election. All current top AKP officials will be eliminated for the next parliamentary term, since ErdoIan decided to keep the party’s three-term-limit bylaw.

Thus, those whose political careers end with the parliamentary election and who might only be regarded as “low-profile” prime ministers are not likely to run as candidates. Because of ErdoIan’s decision, top figures such as Deputy Prime Ministers Bulent ArIn, Mehmet Ali Iahin, BeIir Atalay and Ali Babacan, as well as the founders of the AKP, seem to have been eliminated as prime minister-to-be.

DavutoIlu, who has served as ErdoIan’s foreign policy aisor since his university years, is likely to be the only one to be nominated as the party leader at the Aug. 27 congress.
