MOPH launches Qatar PHS 2017-2022 Consultation

The consultation, a first-of-its-kind survey inviting feedback on public health issues in Qatar, was initially announced by Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health during the opening presentation at the Forum. An in-depth session featuring presentations and a panel discussion then followed on day three of the Forum, with representatives in attendance from Hamad Medical Corporation, Primary Health Care Corporation, Sidra Medical and Research Center and the private sector, as well as students from universities and high schools.

Ministry of Public Health is preparing to formally launch the Qatar Public Health Strategy 2017-2022 later this year. The launch of the Qatar Public Health Strategy Consultation marks the start of an online public health survey to seek Qatar residents’ opinions on health issues – feedback which will be used to inform the strategy prior to its formal launch.

The launch of this consultation is an important occasion. Extensive planning and research has been undertaken as part of the development of the strategy, but it is vital that it fully aligns with the needs and hopes of the people of Qatar, explained HE Dr. Al Kuwari.

By inviting feedback through the public health survey, we will be able to ensure the strategy aligns with the wishes of the very people it aims to help. I encourage all residents of Qatar to answer the survey questions and play their part in developing a strategy that will improve the health of our great country, said HE Dr. Al Kuwari.

During the launch activities guests were given an overview of the Qatar Public Health Strategy 2017-2022 by Sheikh Dr. Mohammed H. Al Thani, Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Public Health. The Qatar Public Health Strategy is an incredibly exciting six-year plan with the potential to make a real positive difference to the lives of the people of Qatar. Through the survey we will receive in-depth information on what people want, and need, in relation to public health we will then study and utilize this feedback to ensure that the final strategy is robust and fit for purpose, said Sheikh Dr. Al Thani during his presentation.

The strategy’s objectives address 16 key health areas including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, road safety, occupational health and tobacco cessation. Public health is about creating the environment and conditions to improve the health and wellbeing of our population. Increasing public understanding of health, ensuring air quality is of the highest standard, establishing more screening clinics to monitor people’s health and providing more support for people who wish to lead healthier lifestyles are all ways in which the Qatar Public Health Strategy will aim to improve the health of Qatar’s residents, explained Sheikh Dr. Al Thani.

A panel discussion featuring local public health experts provided an opportunity for further explanation and debate on health issues in Qatar. The panellists stressed the importance of the Qatar Public Health Strategy in setting out a plan to address key health issues in Qatar, while also highlighting the role every individual in Qatar has in the success of the strategy. Additionally, students from Qatar University and other schools took part in the health survey during the event.

To achieve the strategy’s vision for a healthy population we need individuals, families, employers, schools and government to all play their part and take responsibility for developing a healthier society. The Qatar Public Health Strategy Consultation is a wonderful opportunity for people to engage with the strategy and support its vision to improve the health and wellbeing of the nation, stated Sheikh Dr. Al Thani.
