Minister of Environment and Water marks Arab Agricultural Day

WAM DUBAI, 26th September, 2013 (WAM) — Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water, has asserted that fisheries in the UAE are one of the most important natural resources available in the nation’s waters.

They represents economic and social importance through their contribution to the promotion of food security and as a source of livelihood for those working in the fishing profession and other professions associated with them.

In a statement on the occasion of celebrating “Arab Agricultural Day”, which is marked on 27th of September each year, under the slogan “Fish Farming and Food Security”, he said that as a result of the importance of fisheries, great efforts were made in the development and protection of living, aquatic, and marine environment resources.

Mr. bin Fahad stated that the UAE has made great strides in the field of aqua-culture by laying the foundations for aquatic husbandry and aqua-culture production operations through development of the requirements of sustainable farming.

These efforts were crowned by a grant from President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to establish the “Khalifa bin Zayed Centre for Marine Research”. This comes from H.H. Sheikh Khalifa’s interest in developing work in research, and studies carried out by the centre for the protection and development of the Marine Environment .
