Liberals leader calls for European Marshall plan for Syria

BRUSSELS, Jan 29 (KUNA) — Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE Group) in the European Parliament, Guy Verhofstadt, called for an European Peace and Marshall Plan for Syria, united European action to fight Assad and IS, with full support to democratic Syrian opposition forces.
“The situation in Syria is deteriorating every day. If the situation does not improve, it is estimated that another three million refugees will try to make the journey to Europe. Europe is nearly alone in facing the consequences of the war in Syria and should take the lead to try to end the war,” he told a press conference Friday where he presented a seven-point emergency plan to tackle the refugee crisis in Europe.
Verhofstadt, a former Belgian prime minister, said Russia and the Assad regime must also abide by relevant UNSC Resolutions and stop their bombing campaign against opposition forces.
He said that the EU and the US must work for the implementation of UNSC Resolutions and the ceasefires agreed, “so that the Geneva talks on transitional government can advance, and delivering a future for Syria without Assad.
“Once peace has been established, a European Marshall Plan to rebuild the infrastructure will be essential and contribute to assisting refugees to go back to their country of origin,” he added.
To rebuild the devastated Europe after World War II, the then US Secretary of Stare George Marshall issued a call for a comprehensive economic programme which is known as Marshall Plan. (end)
