Juncker, Cameron discuss Brexit

BRUSSELS, June 27 (KUNA) — President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker had a “polite and friendly” telephone conversation Monday with outgoing British Prime Minister David Cameron on the Brexit fallout, his spokesman Margaritis Schinas said.
The two leaders are looking forward to meet at the margins of an EU summit in Brussels tomorrow, he told a news conference.
“We are now expecting a swift notification of article 50. There will be no negotiations without notification of article 50,” he said. Article 50 of the EU treaty refers to the process that an EU member has to follow if it wants to leave the Union.
The spokesman stressed that the UK stays a member of the EU and after the notification of article 50 “we have two years for the formal exit of the UK,” he said.
Meanwhile, Juncker will be meeting US secretary of state John Kerry later today together with EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, the spokesman added. (end) nk.mt
