Death Toll Rises to 16 in India Mine Collapse

New Delhi, The bodies of 16 workers were recovered from a collapsed mine in India’s eastern state of Jharkhand, officials said Saturday.

A huge portion of the mine caved in near an exit gate of the government-owned facility in Godda district on Thursday evening.

Rescue work has been continuing at the site, even as officials believe seven more miners are still trapped.

“Rescue teams have found five more bodies since late Friday taking the death toll to 16,” the manager of the mine said.

State-run Coal India, which owns the mine, ordered a probe into the cause of the collapse and announced monetary compensation for the families of the victims.
