CHS STUDENT’S RESEARCH RECEIVES ACCLAIM IN WACEM 2018

Two research posters submitted by students at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) at Qatar University (QU) to the 4th World Academic Congress of Emergency Medicine (WACEM 2018) won first place in the event’s poster presentation.

The research projects which were supervised by Dr. Gianfranco Pintus in CHS Department of Biomedical Science focused on the antioxidant resveratrol. The first study found that, contrary to the image promoted by the media, resveratrol is highly toxic when administered in high doses as a supplement. Meanwhile, the second research demonstrated the efficiency of resveratrol treatment to counteract high glucose-induced oxidative stress. This research outcome might pave the way for a potential protective therapy to prevent diabetic-associated complication including fibrosis.

WACEM 2018 is a multidisciplinary academic meeting of 2,000 professionals from a wide variety of settings and countries who provide care, education and conduct research in trauma, emergency and acute care medicine.

The theme for WACEM 2018 was Bridging Gaps and Building Networks in Trauma, Emergency and Acute Care Medicine: Best Evidence and Practice from Academic Systems. The event was organized by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Qatar Council for Health Practitioners (QCHP).
