Gaza: Director of the Government Media Office in Gaza, Ismail Al Thawabta, has revealed that the storm that struck the Gaza Strip yesterday (Tuesday) caused extensive damage to approximately 22,000 tents belonging to displaced persons, leaving more than 288,000 people without protection from the cold and rain.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Thawabta explained in press statements on Wednesday that the estimated losses resulting from the storm amount to about $3.5 million, after rainwater flooded large areas of the camps, rendering them unfit for temporary habitation.
He noted that the rudimentary sewage networks suffered significant damage, while corridors inside schools used as displacement centers were flooded, and their temporary water systems were disrupted, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian conditions.
He said that the food sector suffered significant losses due to the spoilage of food supplies and the loss of aid intended for distribution.
He also confirmed that more than 10 mobile medical units were rendered inoperable, in addition to the loss of essential medicines and supplies due to the difficulty of movement in the flooded areas.
The situation worsened following the unstable weather conditions that affected the region from Monday evening until Tuesday evening, with continuous rainfall exacerbating the crisis for displaced persons and those living in tents.
