French Government Survives No-Confidence Vote

The French government survived on Saturday a no-confidence motion after the prime minister activated Article 49.3 to adopt the public budget bill without a vote.

The motion, which was proposed by the left-wing coalition, was defeated by a vote of 193 to 289, so Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne will remain in office.

Borne had previously used Article 49.3 of the French Constitution to pass the government’s budget bill without a vote in the National Assembly, which allowed the government to bypass the opposition and pass the budget for 2023-2027.

The opposition has accused Borne of using Article 49.3 too frequently. In July 2022, the opposition also failed to bring down the government in a no-confidence motion
