WHO Reports 237 Cholera Deaths and 87,000 Cases in Yemen This Year

Sana'a: The World Health Organization (WHO) reported Wednesday that the number of cholera deaths in Yemen since the beginning of the year has risen to 237, while the number of cases has reached 87,000.

According to Qatar News Agency, the WHO stated in a report that 87,566 new cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhea were reported in Yemen, along with 237 deaths related to the disease, between January 1 and October 31.

The report indicated that the number of deaths related to the epidemic in Yemen has made it the third-highest cholera death rate globally, after South Sudan and Afghanistan.

Cholera claimed the lives of 879 people in Yemen in 2024, out of more than 260,000 cases, according to the WHO's announcement in late January.

The ongoing political conflict in Yemen, which has lasted for more than a decade, exacerbates the deterioration of the health sector's infrastructure and the scarcity of medical supplies, leading to the spread of diseases and epidemics.
