New york: The Qatar Social Work Foundation (QSWF), represented by the Shafallah Center for Persons with Disabilities and the Al Noor Center for the Blind, took part in the 19th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP19) at the United Nations Headquarters. The delegation, led by Al Noor Center Director Mishal Abdullah Al Nuaimi, underscored the Foundation's commitment to promoting disability rights and enhancing Qatar's role in global disability and social empowerment forums.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Foundation organized a side event focused on redesigning transition pathways for persons with disabilities in the era of artificial intelligence. This initiative, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations, was conducted alongside the International Labor Organization (ILO), SESRIC, and the Arab Organization of Persons with Disabilities. The event aimed to bridge the gap between educational outcomes and meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.
Participants advocated for integrated pathways that connect education, practical experience, and economic participation, moving away from traditional segregated models. They explored the potential of artificial intelligence and smart technologies to enhance independence by personalizing learning, aiding workplace performance, and expanding economic opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Discussions also addressed barriers in transitioning from education to employment and strategies to transform successful practices into sustainable national policies. The Al Noor Center and Shafallah Center engaged in Civil Society Day activities, emphasizing resilient community building through sustainable support systems that ensure full participation of persons with disabilities.
The Al Noor Center promoted a shift from institutional care to community-based approaches, advocating for comprehensive support services that include early intervention, rehabilitation, inclusive education, and mental health services. The center also called for increased investment in accessible community services, support for families, and training for caregivers and professionals, underlining the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us."
The Shafallah Center highlighted that success in support systems lies not in the volume of services but in their effectiveness in empowering persons with disabilities to make decisions, develop skills, and access education and employment equally. This participation reflects QSWF's ongoing efforts to advance disability rights and demonstrates Qatar's dedication to fostering inclusive and sustainable societies.
Additionally, QSWF's involvement aligns with its consultative role with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), promoting international engagement and the exchange of expertise in disability rights and inclusion.
