Qatar’s Strategic Role in Tech Transformation Highlighted at MWC25 Doha

Doha: Director General of the GSMA Vivek Badrinath emphasized the significance of MWC25 Doha, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), marking the first time the event is held in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This development follows Qatar's notable interest in technological transformation, positioning the country as a prominent hub to advance the technological ecosystem.

According to Qatar News Agency, Badrinath highlighted the event's development in collaboration with MCIT, underscoring the telecommunications sector's genuine desire to conduct business. He noted that the success of this edition will validate the decision to host the conference in Qatar, acknowledging MCIT's support in organizing the event and the collaborative efforts to ensure its success.

Badrinath pointed out that the conference will feature participation from 2,500 relevant and specialized companies, alongside 250 exhibitors. The event will also host a GSMA Ministerial Programme, attracting wide representation from 110 countries.

The Director General mentioned that the international participation will be of particular interest, especially from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which will showcase their technological strengths, infrastructure, investment capabilities, and innovative solutions in these sectors.

He spoke about MWC25 Doha's role in shaping the region's digital future amid growing investments in 5G technologies, cloud computing, and emerging technologies. He highlighted that 5G technology has already reached 50 percent coverage in GCC countries, which are leading this progress. The conference aims to extend this momentum across the MENA region.

Badrinath acknowledged the existing usage gap and limited access to mobile internet in the wider region, noting that 340 million people remain unconnected. However, he emphasized that the leadership of GCC countries in this progress serves as motivation to advance further.

Regarding the impact of artificial intelligence and smart transformation on businesses, Badrinath stated that digital transformation is essential, noting that 10 percent of corporate revenues in the region will be allocated to it. The increasing use of AI is enhancing company efficiency and productivity.

He stressed the need for strong cooperation between governments and operators in the telecommunications sector. The GSMA Ministerial Programme exemplifies this, enabling dialogue among governments, regulators, and operators about advancing digitalization.

Badrinath outlined measures governments can take, such as supporting AI governance, setting appropriate rules, enabling experimentation, and maintaining low sector-specific taxes. He emphasized that connectivity is fundamental for digital transformation and AI.

He highlighted the importance of allowing operators to invest, noting that low taxes and a predictable spectrum framework are key measures, and these topics will be discussed in the ministerial programme.

In response to questions about increasing investments in 5G, cloud computing, and new technologies, Badrinath told QNA that the regional mobile economy, currently valued at USD 350 billion, is expected to grow to USD 470 billion by 2030, driven by innovation, investment, and collaboration.

Badrinath stated that 2,500 companies are actively meeting in Qatar to explore new projects, investments, and technologies. He expressed confidence in the event's potential, given the pace of investments from GCC countries.

Regarding MWC25 Doha's outcomes, Badrinath said they will be evident in the level of participation and the announcements made, reaching over 30. He emphasized that the platform aims to unite the sector, facilitating new deals, project launches, and introductions of new products and initiatives expected in the coming days.
