The hague: The State of Qatar actively participated in the 30th Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CSP-30), held in The Hague. Representing Qatar's delegation was HE Ambassador Dr. Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani, who is also the country's representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
According to Qatar News Agency, during his address, Al Qahtani expressed Qatar's support for the OPCW Executive Council's adoption of Decision EC-110/DEC.1, which calls for the expedited on-site destruction of remnants of chemical weapons in Syria. He acknowledged the constructive cooperation from member states of the council and highlighted Qatar's diplomatic efforts in fostering a positive environment among the involved parties, which led to the historic decision.
Al Qahtani emphasized that this development exemplifies a collective and realistic response to changes in Syria, serving as a model of multilateral action based on dialogue, collaboration, and mediation. He noted that this advancement enhances the credibility of the OPCW regime and the organization's ability to adapt to international developments.
He also mentioned the tragic events in the occupied Palestinian territories over the past two years, referencing the ceasefire deal signed on October 11, achieved through diplomatic efforts by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt. Al Qahtani expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip due to the ongoing blockade and Israel's ceasefire violations.
Qatar condemned Israeli actions, including the alleged use of prohibited chemical weapons in Gaza, and supports Palestine's efforts to investigate these claims. Al Qahtani reiterated Qatar's belief in dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution as the best approach to global security and peace.
He highlighted the importance of global efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, stressing compliance with international law and ensuring that chemical weapons are never used or threatened under any circumstances.
