Doha: Qatar Media Corporation has unveiled its latest national project, a Media Encyclopedia, which aims to reshape the scientific mindset of the nation and beyond. During a panel discussion at the launch event, Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad highlighted the importance of institutional support for any impactful human endeavor, emphasizing the specialized backing that the encyclopedia project enjoys, setting a model for other entities in the country to follow.
According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Al Fayyad explained that the encyclopedia draws on the Arab world's rich historical tradition of encyclopedic knowledge, documenting the nation's intellect and methodology. It aims to reduce cognitive fragmentation by providing a unified scientific framework and presenting concepts within their historical contexts, thus transforming them into a comprehensive knowledge repository.
Dr. Al Fayyad described the initiative as a "knowledge engineering project" rather than a mere "compilation project." It seeks to standardize media terminology and build a reference knowledge system that ensures accurate understanding, thereby protecting the audience from misinformation. This encyclopedia is envisioned to reshape scientific thinking and reconstruct the "compass of thought" within the context of Arab intellectual history.
Further emphasizing the encyclopedia's significance, Dr. Muhammad Al Khatib pointed out the need for such a resource in today's era of information overload. He stated that the encyclopedia encourages critical inquiry and helps deconstruct media concepts through theoretical, cultural, and pragmatic analyses.
Journalist Ahmed Al Sheikh highlighted the encyclopedia's importance for media outlets, stressing its role in providing a gateway to knowledge in the face of terminological proliferation. He commended Qatar's longstanding media efforts and the encyclopedia's potential to restore media's place in an era of abundant information, offering a tool for verifying the accuracy of circulating information.
Al Sheikh also emphasized the encyclopedia's role in preserving the Arabic language's unique character, filling a crucial gap in reinforcing Arab identity. He noted that the encyclopedia will play a significant role in media training and offer the public a means to verify media content, similar to the impact Al Jazeera has had in spreading knowledge.
