NCHR Affirms Freedom of Expression as Cornerstone of Democracy

Amman – In a statement issued on Monday, the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) emphasized the importance of freedom of expression as a fundamental cornerstone of democratic societies. This statement followed the NCHR’s observation of recent marches and solidarity rallies in support of the people in the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing conflict.

According to Jordan News Agency, the right to peaceful assembly is integral to freedom of expression, but it comes with the responsibility of adhering to legal and nonviolent methods. The organization highlighted the importance of avoiding damage to private or public property and underscored the collective responsibility in maintaining security and stability.

The NCHR reported the formation of a specialized team tasked with investigating the detention conditions and types of arrests made recently. This team has conducted visits to various detention facilities and liaised with the relevant authorities to monitor the situation closely.

In its statement, the NCHR reiterated that the principles of public participation in decision-making, fostering pluralism, and promoting a vibrant and effective society are crucial to the foundation of a genuinely democratic society. The organization stressed that detention or arrest should not be a standard response to peaceful assembly.

The NCHR also reminded the public of their rights under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Jordanian Constitution, both of which guarantee freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.

For individuals with complaints or concerns related to these issues, the NCHR encouraged them to reach out through their website at www.nchr.org.jo, or via their hotline at 0798866884.
