Jordan’s economic modernization drive would boost textile exports -JCI

Representative of the textile and leather industries at Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI), Ehab Qadri, said implementation of the sector’s initiatives and priorities within Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision (EMV) would move these industries to “advanced” levels on the “highest” exporting countries globally. In a statement on Sunday, Qadri noted the textile sector currently ranks 16th globally in exporting its locally manufactured products and 12th in terms of exports to the U.S. market. Jordan, he said, is the first Arab and Middle East country to export the sector’s products to the United States, as its exports accounted for 2% of the total U.S. textile imports. On future performance indicators, he said the current textile sector would nearly triple over the next ten years, estimating Jordan’s textile exports to reach approximately $7.3 billion, compared to about $2.1 billion by end 2022. Qadri noted achieving these goals would also contribute to improving performance of multiple Jordanian economic and social indicators, primarily creating approximately 149,000 new job opportunities for Jordanians, which is reflected in reducing unemployment rates.
