EU and Gulf Cooperation Council Condemn Attacks in Strait of Hormuz

Brussels: The European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council have issued a co-chairs statement reaffirming the importance of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This comes in response to recent attacks by Iran on commercial vessels and sovereign territories in the region. According to European Union, the statement emphasizes that freedom of navigation and the right of passage through the Strait of Hormuz are protected under international law, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. These rights are guaranteed for ships of all states and should not be hindered by any state. The statement strongly condemns the attacks by Iran, which have put civilian lives and mariners at risk, violated international law, and breached United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817. The statement rejects any claims of sovereignty or control over the Strait of Hormuz by any state and opposes any imposition of permits, transit tolls, or service fees on international shipping. It stress es that no bilateral agreements or memorandums can unlawfully govern or restrict the right of passage through an international strait. Solidarity is expressed with the affected states and seafarers of all nationalities endangered by these attacks. The statement calls on Iran to cease all attacks and interference with maritime navigation, to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and free from any conditions or fees, and to adhere to international law and Security Council Resolution 2817. It also highlights the importance of international and regional institutions responsible for maritime governance and security. The European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council commit to continue coordinating efforts to uphold freedom of navigation, protect international shipping and seafarers, and promote peace and security in the region. The statement concludes with a call for restraint and a commitment to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis and maintain freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
