DOHA — Al Wakrah successfully overturned an initial deficit to secure a 2-1 victory against Umm Salal during Week 7 of the 2023-2024 Expo Stars League at Al Janoub Stadium this Sunday.
According to a new release by Qatar News Agency, Mohamed Benyettou scored twice for Al Wakrah at the 45+6 and 64th minutes, nullifying Meshaal Al Shammari’s 22nd-minute lead for Umm Salal. As a result, Al Wakrah’s point tally reached 14, while Umm Salal’s remained at eight.
In the opening minutes, both teams proceeded with caution, producing few clear chances. Al Shammari’s 22nd-minute goal for Umm Salal was set up by Andy Delort and served as the match’s initial score. Delort dribbled past three Al Wakrah defenders to assist Al Shammari, who drove the ball into the net from the center of the box.
Subsequently, the match’s tempo increased. Al Wakrah sought an equalizing goal, and Umm Salal aimed to extend their lead. Al Wakrah’s Jacinto Dala and Omar Salah came close to leveling the score, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
The turning point for Al Wakrah came just before halftime. A handball violation by Umm Salal’s Hossam Kamal in the penalty area led to a VAR-reviewed penalty kick. Benyettou converted the opportunity, tying the score.
Minutes into the second half, both teams had opportunities to change the scoreline, but these were narrowly missed. A second penalty for Al Wakrah in the 63rd minute turned the tables. Umm Salal’s Ali Afif was penalized for a handball, and Benyettou made no mistake from the spot, scoring the winning goal.
Umm Salal attempted to salvage the match with a double substitution in the 75th minute, replacing Khaled Waleed with Khaled Al Zereiqi and Andy Delort with Ilyas Brimil. Despite these changes, the scoreline remained, handing the victory to Al Wakrah.
