Qatar Highlights Maritime Security and Technological Innovation at UN Security Council Debate

New York:The State of Qatar has emphasized the critical role of maritime security in international peace efforts, calling for the integration of technological innovation to enhance global safety. This was conveyed by Her Excellency Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a high-level debate at the UN Security Council focused on "Emerging Technologies and Maritime Security Implications for Peace and Security."

According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency highlighted Qatar's dedication to maritime security as an essential component of global peace. She pointed out the dual potential of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and advanced surveillance, to improve maritime safety while warning of their risks to commercial shipping and trade security if misused.

The developments in the Middle East, particularly threats to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, were cited by Sheikha Alya as evidence of the severe consequences that can arise. She called for adherence to international law and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 to ensure navigational rights and freedoms. She also reiterated Qatar's rejection of using the Strait of Hormuz as a political tool and advocated for its reopening.

Sheikha Alya emphasized the necessity of responsible technological use in maritime domains, compliance with international law, and reinforced cybersecurity measures. She stressed the importance of supporting developing countries with technical assistance and capacity-building. The Security Council's role in addressing these challenges was underscored, alongside Qatar's active participation in the International Maritime Organization to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels.
