Doha: The Qatar Basketball Federation has announced the organization of a three-team international friendly tournament featuring national teams from Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. Scheduled to take place from August 20 to 22 at Al Janoub Stadium, the tournament is part of the preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 and the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. According to Qatar News Agency, the tournament is especially crucial for the Qatari national team as it embarks on a busy schedule of international and continental competitions. The team's participation in the friendly matches comes just days before the fourth window of the Asian qualifiers for the 2027 Basketball World Cup, which will segue into preparations for the Asian Games in Japan next month. The event offers Qatar's coaching staff the opportunity to evaluate the team's technical and physical readiness by playing multiple matches in quick succession. It aims to improve team cohesion, assess player capabilities, and experiment with different options and lineups ahead of official competitions. The three-day tournament will feature matches between the Gulf national teams, providing a competitive environment suitable for their upcoming challenges. Qatar will face Bahrain on August 20 in the opening round, followed by a match between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on August 21. The tournament will conclude with a match between Qatar and Saudi Arabia on August 22. Upon completion of the tournament, Qatar will proceed to the fourth window of the Asian qualifiers for the 2027 Basketball World Cup, beginning with a match against China in Doha on August 27, followed by a game against Japan on August 30. These matches will serve as significant tests for Qatar, given the experience and strength of their opponents on the Asian stage. The choice of Al Janoub Stadium as the venue for the tournament is significant, marking its transformation from a football facility into a basketball arena. This tournament will test the stadium's readiness, including its playing surface, equipment, and facilities, providing valuable experience ahead of the 2027 Basketball World Cup. This will be the first time the World Cup will be held in the Middle East and North Africa, with games taking place at Lusail, Al Duhail, Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah, and Al Janoub arenas.
