New York: The State of Qatar has reiterated its commitment to supporting the efforts of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization. This support emphasizes the significance of clarifying international law provisions and aiding the UN’s reform process as outlined in Resolution 3499 of 1975. Qatar expressed its appreciation for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ role in enhancing the UN’s influence and achieving the Charter’s objectives.
According to Qatar News Agency, this assertion was made through a statement by Abdulaziz Fadala Mubarak Al Sulaiti, Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the UN, during the Sixth Committee of the 79th UN General Assembly. The statement highlighted the necessity of consensus on the Committee’s annual report elements and reiterated Qatar’s firm position on adhering to the UN Charter’s principles. Highlighting the need for equitable representation in the Security Council, Qatar underscored the importance of increasing its membership and improving its working methods, particularly concerning veto power. Al Sulaiti mentioned initiatives to restrict veto use, mainly in cases of mass atrocities.
On the topic of dispute resolution, Al Sulaiti noted Qatar’s policy of emphasizing peaceful means, such as mediation, as integral to the UN Charter. He stated that Qatar’s diplomacy has earned international trust and praise for mediating disputes peacefully, thereby contributing to global peace and stability.
