Nagoya:The Team Qatar delegation celebrated significant victories at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, where the national padel team secured a gold medal in the sport's debut. Qatar's Rashid Nawaf and Mishari Nawaf triumphed over Malaysia in straight sets in the final match.
According to Qatar News Agency, the delegation also celebrated a third consecutive gold medal in beach volleyball, achieved by Qatar's Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan. They defeated Indonesia's team 2-1 in the final. Additionally, Shaheen Mohammed earned a bronze in the 77kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition after defeating Indonesia's Andika Sulaiman.
The achievements were celebrated at Qatar House in Nagoya, attended by key figures from the Qatar Olympic Committee, including HE First Vice-President Mohammed bin Yousef Al Mana, HE Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, and HE Director of the QOC Sports Sector Sheikh Khalifa bin Khalid Al-Thani. Members of the Qatari delegation and the victorious athletes joined the celebration.
The victory in padel marked a historic moment as Rashid and Mishari Nawaf defeated Malaysia's Christian Chin and Aidan Yunus with scores of 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, the beach volleyball win further solidified Qatar's dominance in the sport at the Asian Games, following their previous titles in Jakarta-Palembang 2018 and Hangzhou 2022.
This year, Qatar's delegation has earned 16 medals in total, comprising five gold, six silver, and five bronze medals. President of the Asian Padel Federation, Tareq Darwish Zainal, highlighted the significance of the padel team's gold medal, calling it an extraordinary feat. He praised the federation's efforts to develop the sport and expressed hopes for future successes.
Rashid Nawaf voiced his overwhelming happiness and gratitude for the support received, dedicating the victory to Qatar's leadership and citizens. Similarly, Mishari Nawaf expressed his pride in the achievement and motivation to continue striving for future successes.
President of the Qatar Volleyball Association, Ali bin Ghanem Al Kuwari, celebrated the beach volleyball team's third consecutive gold, attributing it to sustained efforts and support for the sport in Qatar.
In addition to these achievements, Qatar shooter Reem Al Sharshani was elected to the OCA's Athletes' Committee as a representative of West Asia, highlighting Qatar's presence in continental sports bodies.
As the Games conclude, Qatar will receive the Olympic Council of Asia flag, marking the beginning of preparations for hosting the 21st Asian Games in Doha in 2030. This handover signifies a new chapter for Qatari sports, building on past experiences and emphasizing sustainability for future hosting.
