The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Department of Statistics have formalized a memorandum of understanding to undertake a comprehensive statistical survey of local tourism. The MOU was inked by Secretary General Imad Hijazin representing the Ministry, and Director General Haidar Freihat on behalf of the Department of Statistics. Key representatives from the Central Bank and the Tourism Promotion Authority were also present during the signing. Central to the memorandum’s objectives is the determination of local tourism spending patterns, insights into the goals of local tourism trips, with special emphasis on the “We Wanted Paradise” program, and an identification of key attractions in the realm of local tourism. Furthermore, it will pave the way for the compilation of account tables tailored to the tourism sector. This initiative underscores the pressing need to modernize and expand data collection methods and statistical practices. By aligning with globally accepted concepts and classifications, it intends to amplify the tourism sector’s contribution to the national economy. Upon completion, the Department of Statistics will leverage the survey’s findings to gain insights into household expenditure trends in local tourism. This data, encompassing various spending facets and tourism objectives, will be instrumental in the formulation of account tables specific to the tourism sector. Additionally, the findings will further inform the development and optimization of local tourism initiatives.
