Lebanon PM Stresses State Institutions Must Decide on War and Peace

Doha:Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized the importance of ensuring that decisions regarding war and peace remain within the jurisdiction of Lebanon's constitutional institutions.

According to Qatar News Agency, Salam made these remarks during an event commemorating the centenary of the adoption of the Constitution and the founding of the Lebanese Republic. He highlighted that the Taif accord was not just a settlement to end the war but a renewed effort to manage Lebanon's diversity without it leading to a struggle over the state.

Salam noted that the accord affirmed Lebanon as a nation for all Lebanese, with an Arab identity and parliamentary democracy based on the separation of powers, balance, and cooperation. He argued that popular sovereignty is meaningless if authority stems from multiple sources outside the institutions representing the people, and that the rule of law must be enforced equally on all.

Salam also remarked that state sovereignty would be incomplete if decisions on war, peace, and national security were made outside the constitutional institutions.
