Beirut: Lebanese Army Commander General Rodolphe Helou said Lebanon is undergoing a critical and exceptionally difficult phase in its history, citing the continued occupation of Lebanese territory by the Israeli entity and its violations that result in casualties and hinder army deployment.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a speech marking Lebanon's Independence Day, which falls on Saturday, General Helou stated that the army has made significant efforts since the ceasefire agreement came into effect to implement its plan, reinforce its presence in the South Litani sector, and extend state authority across all Lebanese territory.
He emphasized that these efforts require close support within a comprehensive national framework, along with the provision of resources and the necessary conditions to restore stability.
The army, he added, continues to combat terrorism, pursue those who threaten security, fight drug trafficking across various regions, and secure Lebanon's borders and territorial waters.
He also noted ongoing cooperation with several countries to strengthen the army's capabilities.
On November 27 of last year, a ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon came into effect, stipulating the withdrawal of Israeli forces from border villages within 60 days.
The Lebanese government later extended the deadline to February 18, but the occupying forces remained in five positions and continue to violate the agreement.
