Justice Ministry, CBE to implement presidential initiative to set free imprisoned Gharemat

Minister of Justice Omar Marwan has contacted Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Tareq Amer to count the final verdicts issued against Gharemat (women imprisoned for failing to pay their debts) nationwide during 2019-2020-2021.

The move comes as part of efforts to implement presidential directives on taking needed measures to reduce the number of Gharemat and launch an initiative to set free the imprisoned Gharemat in an effort to bring together and preserve the Egyptian family, the CBE said in a statement on Friday.

It was found that 729 female debtors (Gharemat) received final verdicts in 1,222 cases across the govarnorates, the CBE added.

The CBE board of directors approved contributing about EGP 61 million to pay for debts of Gharemat.
