Irbid Completes 100% of Water Harvesting Projects, Says Agriculture Directorate Official

Irbid, Jordan: Dr. Abdel Hafez Abu Orabi, the Director of the Irbid Agriculture Directorate, has announced the successful completion of all agricultural projects implemented through decentralization plans in the northern governorate of Irbid for the second consecutive year.

According to Jordan News Agency, the focus of these projects has been on water harvesting, aimed at preserving rainwater in wells constructed throughout the districts and villages of the governorate. In a statement to “Petra” on Sunday, he highlighted the entry of 610 new wells into service this year, marking a significant achievement in the region’s water harvesting efforts. This number represents a “record” achievement compared to previous years, with each well having a capacity of 30 cubic meters.

In 2022 alone, approximately 500 rainwater collection wells were constructed, demonstrating the directorate’s commitment to enhancing water conservation efforts. Abu Orabi emphasized that these water harvesting projects are part of the National Plan for Sustainable Agriculture, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture.

The program’s primary aim is to make optimal use of rainwater, especially in the context of current water challenges and climate change. With climate patterns resulting in heavier downpours over short periods, leading to floods and fresh water loss, these water harvesting initiatives are seen as crucial for mitigating the impact and ensuring sustainable water management in the region.
