Health Minister, Iraqi team discuss cooperation in drug addiction therapy

Minister of Health Firas Hawari discussed on Tuesday with the head and members of the Committee on Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances in the Iraqi Parliament, prospects for cooperation in training health staff on the treatment of drug addiction. During a meeting at the ministry, Hawari spoke about the deep-rooted and historical relations between Jordan and Iraq, and the two countries’ efforts and cooperation in combating drugs. He said Jordan is keen to work closely with Iraq to counter drugs, stressing the need for cooperation by all countries to combat “this scourge”, especially countries with common borders. Hawari said Jordanian psychiatrists play a key role in devising plans for the treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, and following up on recovery stages at treatment and rehabilitation centers across the Kingdom. The Iraqi team urged close cooperation with Jordan, pointing to the social, economic and psychological damage caused by drugs. They said their visit came to learn from the expertise of politically and economically stable countries, including Jordan, in the treatment of drug addicts and their integration in society after recovery. The delegation visited the drug rehabilitation center in the Amman suburb of Shafa Badran, where they were briefed about the treatment process.
