Doha: Doha Design District (DDD), powered by Msheireb Properties, has announced the 20 shortlisted projects advancing to the final stage of its Public Art Open Call. According to Qatar News Agency, the response was extraordinary, with over 220 proposals received from 53 nationalities. The submissions highlighted the enthusiasm artists and designers have for engaging with real places, communities, and the living fabric of a city. From this diverse field, 20 works have been selected, representing a wide range of countries: five from Qatar, three from the United States, two from Lebanon, and one each from France, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Japan, India, Finland, Tunisia, Kuwait, and Thailand. This selection reflects the international character of Doha. Director of Doha Design District Dana Kazic stated that the open call was an invitation to the world to imagine Doha's potential. She emphasized that the shortlisted works do not merely respond to the spaces but challenge and move observers, underscor ing the importance of public art. The district eagerly anticipates what the final winners will bring to life. The shortlist was determined by a distinguished jury comprising respected voices in design, culture, and urban development. Each proposal, regardless of the creator's experience level, was evaluated based on several core criteria, including concept strength, originality, site engagement, public interaction, sustainability, technical soundness, and timeline feasibility. The process is ongoing, with four final winners to be selected through jury deliberation and public voting. The public can view the proposals at Doha Design District Headquarters and vote for their favorite from 18 to 25 June via DDD's website. The chosen projects will be developed and installed across Msheireb Downtown Doha, turning the district into a dynamic stage for contemporary expression. By integrating public art into daily life, Doha Design District aims to demonstrate that great design thrives beyond galleries, enhancing s treets, plazas, and walkways. Through initiatives like the Public Art Open Call, the district supports creative practitioners, fosters interdisciplinary exchange, and strengthens the cultural fabric of one of the Gulf's most ambitious urban locations.
