Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets a Number of US Officials

HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani met separately today with HE US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf, HE US Special Envoy for Yemen Timothy Lenderking, US Special Representative for Iran Robert Malley, United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West, during a visit His Excellency is making to the US capital Washington D.C.

The meetings dealt with reviewing bilateral relations, GCC-American ties, the latest developments in Palestine and the importance of unity among Palestinian factions, and joint cooperation on regional and international issues.

The meetings also dealt with the latest developments in Yemen, particularly humanitarian conditions. It also discussed the latest developments of the nuclear deal, and the importance of holding a regional dialogue with Iran that brings different point of view all parties closer. The meeting also dealt with developments in Afghanistan on the political and security fronts, and the ways to provide the humanitarian needs of the Afghan people, support girls’ right to education, in addition to a number of issues of joint interest.

On developments in Yemen, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the only way to resolve the Yemeni crisis is through negotiations between Yemenis in line with the outcomes of the national dialogue, the GCC Initiative, UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution no. 2216. He stressed the State of Qatar’s firm position of supporting the unity of Yemen.

US Special Envoy for Yemen thanked the State of Qatar for its contribution of $2 million to face the threat floating oil storage vessel Safer to the Yemeni shores.

On the Afghan issue, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs renewed the State of Qatar’s firm position of supporting the Afghan people and their right to live with dignity, stressing the State of Qatar’s efforts to support and facilitate reaching a comprehensive political reconciliation that achieves security and stability in Afghanistan and the region.
