Luanda: Angolan President Joao Manuel Gon§alves Louren§o today called on the African Union (AU) to take concrete action to strengthen conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms on the continent, and to define clear responsibilities and effective mechanisms for monitoring the implementation of decisions.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a speech during the opening of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Luanda, Louren§o emphasized the need for the continent to bolster its capacity to prevent conflicts, mediate crises, and enforce collective decisions. He remarked that the convening of the meeting reflects the importance African leaders place on issues of peace and security, as well as the necessity to enhance the capacity to address conflicts that continue to impact various regions of the continent.

He further stated that achieving sustainable development, economic integration, and improving the living conditions of African peoples "cannot be accomplished without security, peace, stability, and harmony among the peoples."

Louren§o urged the mobilization of all available political, diplomatic, financial, and institutional tools at the African Union's disposal to prevent conflicts from escalating into wars and to work towards ending existing conflicts as swiftly as possible.

The session is being held under the theme "Strengthening Conflict Prevention and Resolution Mechanisms in Africa," with the participation of heads of state and government, African Union officials, and representatives of regional and international organizations.
