Doha: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers. There have been no reports of damage or casualties so far.
The region frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity because of its location at the intersection of the South American and Antarctic tectonic plates. In August 2021, the South Sandwich Islands experienced a powerful earthquake exceeding magnitude 8.0. Despite the strength of that quake, no casualties or damage were reported, largely due to the islands' lack of population.
