Baghdad: The 27th Baghdad International Book Fair kicked off Sept. 2. The event is organized by the Iraqi Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, with the participation of 615 publishing houses representing 21 Arab and foreign countries, alongside a variety of cultural institutions.
According to Qatar News Agency, the event runs until Sept. 12, 2026, marking a significant cultural demonstration characterized by the magnitude of domestic, Arab, and foreign participation. Dr. Fadhil Al Badrani, Undersecretary of the Ministry, emphasized the impressive participation from various countries in previous editions, highlighting Iraq's special cultural relationships with Arab nations. He expressed hopes for the continuation of promoting Qatari participation in future editions.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee Dr. Abdul Wahab Al Radhi shared that the current edition features a combination of cultural programs, including almost six to seven panel discussions and cultural events daily. One of the highlights of this edition is the "I Read" initiative.
Hind Kamel, Advisor to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities for Cultural and Artistic Affairs, expressed her satisfaction with the remarkable public turnout at the fair. She considered the record attendance a reflection of growing awareness of the importance of culture and books in Iraqi society. Kamel noted that the high number of attendees indicates that books still hold their standing and importance, with reading and culture remaining central to the interests of the Iraqi public.
The Iraqi Ministry of Trade confirmed that it had implemented all technical, service, and organizational requirements to ensure the fair's success, describing it as a "major cultural event." Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hannoun emphasized to QNA that the fair represents an important cultural event reflecting Baghdad's civilizational and cultural standing. It contributes to promoting reading and knowledge while providing a broad space for communication among publishing houses, authors, intellectuals, and the public.
