According to Qatar News Agency, the Permanent Representative detailed Qatar’s concerns regarding the escalating humanitarian issues in the Gaza Strip, underscoring the impact on civilians, particularly children and women. The briefing, organized by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, focused on the ongoing difficulties faced by the Palestinian territories.
In her address, Sheikha Alya referenced a UN General Assembly resolution, co-sponsored by Qatar, emphasizing the imperative of unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza. She emphasized the need for essential supplies and services to be provided in compliance with international humanitarian law, which mandates the protection of civilians from being deprived of indispensable necessities.
Highlighting Qatar’s condemnation of any targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, which constitutes a significant breach of international law, the representative cited recent attacks on schools, hospitals, and places of worship, leading to grave casualties.
Calling for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation, she urged all parties to exhibit maximum restraint and prioritize civilian protection to halt the broadening spiral of conflict.
The Qatari aid contribution, as outlined by the representative, totals 124 tons, signifying substantial support for Palestinians under harsh conditions. She confirmed Qatar’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), including an $18 million pledge for 2023-2024.
