The US election is conducted indirectly through the Electoral College, which consists of 538 votes. Each state has a specific number of electoral votes equal to its representation in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The candidate who receives the most votes from a state's residents wins the entirety of that state's electoral votes, except in Nebraska and Maine, which have a unique system allowing their electoral votes to be divided between candidates based on the proportion of votes each receives.
