US Judge Rejects Trump’s Request to Step Down from 2020 Election Trial

US District Judge Tanya Chutkan on Wednesday rejected US former President Donald Trump’s request that she step aside from the federal case accusing him of illegally attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, rejecting arguments that she has shown bias against him.

On Sep. 11, Trump’s lawyers argued that Chutkan should step aside because of past statements she has made at the sentencing of participants in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

Trump’s lawyers said that Judge Chutkan suggested that “Trump should be prosecuted and imprisoned.” Trump had previously called Chutkan a “Trump-hating judge”.
