UNESCO Moves to Protect Palestinian Cultural Heritage and Institutions

Tunis:The Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has unanimously adopted two resolutions focusing on safeguarding Palestinian cultural heritage and protecting educational and cultural institutions.

According to Qatar News Agency, these resolutions, adopted at the Board's 225th session, address the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory and emphasize the implementation of UNESCO's decisions regarding educational and cultural institutions in the occupied Arab territories.

The resolutions highlight the necessity to protect Palestinian cultural heritage, including critical historic sites in Jerusalem, Hebron, and Bethlehem. They also stress the safeguarding of educational and cultural institutions amid ongoing destruction and violations. Furthermore, the resolutions insist on the implementation of UNESCO's decisions.

On July 22, UNESCO's World Heritage Committee adopted four decisions concerning the conservation of Palestinian World Heritage sites listed as in danger. Palestine's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Adel Atieh, welcomed the resolutions, noting that attacks on schools, universities, heritage sites, and journalists not only affect Palestinians but also undermine UNESCO's mandate and values.

Atieh expressed concerns over increasing attacks on Palestinian cultural heritage and educational institutions, as well as violations against students, journalists, and farmers. He urged for UNESCO's empowerment to fulfill its mandate and called for its decisions to be translated into concrete actions and tangible results.
