UN Envoy to Sudan: Sudanese Parties Are Closer to Settlement, Return to Civil Rule

New York, March 21 (QNA) – Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Sudan Volker Perthes expressed his optimism about the chances of achieving progress in the political process, and that the Sudanese parties are the closest they can be to reaching a settlement and returning to civilian rule.

“Today, we are the closest we have been to a solution, although challenges remain,” Perthes said in a briefing to the UN Security Council (UNSC).

He referred to his last briefing to the Council on Dec. 8, 2022 when he said that the Sudanese army and a wide range of civilian parties had signed an agreement on the political framework, adding that it was an important moment that ushered in a new phase of the political process that aims to turn into a new transitional period.

The UN envoy reviewed the efforts made by the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) during the past months, saying that each the consultations gathered hundreds of Sudanese women and men, representing a broad social, professional and political spectrum.

The head of the UN Mission in Sudan stressed the need more than ever for collective efforts by the international community to support Sudan.

He affirmed the need to help the next government to be able to deal with the underlying issues of addressing the causes of conflict, implementing security measures, improving the lives of Sudanese women and men, and preparing for free and fair elections.

The final political agreement of the framework agreement signed between the military component and several political forces in Sudan was officially decided to be on the first of next April, according to which the final exit of the military component from the political process and the formation of a civilian government will take place on April 11, which will run a two-year transitional period that ends conduct general elections in the country.

A number of influential political forces identified by the framework agreement are still outside the current political process, along with other forces that have announced their opposition and resistance to the agreement once it is signed and put into effect in the country, while other forces are still waiting for the outcome of the situation after the transition to the new political stage.
